About Pittsburgh Lite Trak:
Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 12:38AM Pittsburgh Lite Trak was formed by group of guys that wanted to utilize new light weight modules, Kato Unitrak and a free flowing design in N Scale modeling.
What has evolved over these last several years is a unique group that has developed modules that are flexible for show space and are open to the public to really get up close with. We utilize a light weight frame with foam insulation bases. We have a one track mainline with loops for continuous running with industries and switches to work along the mainline. The modules don’t match making the layout look disjointed, but it allows for a more open space. The term FreeMoN best describes our modules.
All track is Kato Unitrak. We are almost 100% DCC utilizing Digitrax products. With the one track mainline, DCC allows us to run many trains on one track. As we develop our modules, we will incorporate signals and operations to simulate a real operating railroad.
Since our layout is flexible, and utilizing Kato Unitrak, we can setup our modules in about an hour’s time. Our take down time is about 20 – 30 minutes.
Since adopting these methods, we are not an NTrak group. We are a group modeling in N Scale. Our modules cannot be included in large NTrak layouts. But we have the same goals that NTrak uses. Modeling in N Scale, Doing public shows and promoting N Scale and Model Railroading.
We constantly change modules to try new techniques or use a new structure that has come to market or just to keep the layout fresh and exciting. When we setup at a show, it is never the same thing twice. Since we are flexible we can setup the layout in various forms. The flexibility of our modules allows us to have an open design, that allows the public to view all sides of the layout. We can adapt to any location, either in an open end square, a liner, against the wall location or anything in-between.
We use no barriers. We allow the public to get close to the modules and trains. This is especially gratifying when the kids can get close and count the cars on a long trains or adults can look at the details of a scene.
